A LOUD bang caused alarm amongst passengers at a Wigan train station earlier today.
An eye witness told the Evening Post that shortly after a train for Liverpool pulled up to a platform at Wigan North Western at about midday he heard a “massive bang” that caused smoke to come from the overhead cables.
The witness, who asked not to be named, said that he thought the bang left the train without power for about half an hour.
He said: “As people were boarding there was a massive bang from above from the overhead electric cables. “People were screaming and there was smoke coming from the cable. Staff seemed to think it was a balloon that had connected with the cables.
“I had to get my train from a different platform but I think that one got going after half an hour of having no power.”
Virgin Trains, which operates Wigan North Western, have been unavailble for comment on the incident.
