Ukip brought its battle bus to the borough yesterday as two of the party's MEPs urged residents to reject calls to stay in the European Union.

The Eurosceptic party’s vehicle spent around an hour parked in front of Leigh town hall as part of a North West tour which also took in Nantwich and Blackpool.

North West elected representatives Paul Nuttall and Steven Woolfe urged supporters to vote in favour of leaving the EU in the June 23 referendum. They also toured Leigh town centre to speak to businesses and undecided voters.

Ukip decided to visit the borough as the party has polled strongly in elections in the town in recent years.

The battle bus’ tour comes less than a month after former Labour leader Ed Miliband led the party’s visit to Wigan to persuade voters to stay in the EU.
