Bomb scare in Wigan town centre

Wigan town centre shelter for the homeless was evacuated after staff were told there was a bomb planted in the building.

The alarm was sounded at lunchtime today (Thursday) after contact was made with The Brick in Arcade Street, off Library Street.

Police were called to the premises as the occupants kept a safe distance.

And after conducting a thorough search, officers came to the conclusion that there was no suspicious package and everyone was allowed back inside.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called at around 1pm on Thursday May 4 to reports of a suspicious package at a homeless shelter on Arcade Street, Wigan.

“Staff at the shelter carried out a voluntary evacuation and, on arrival, officers searched the building but no suspicious package was found.

“There is not believed to be any risk at this time.”

Officers have declined to disclose how contact was made about the alleged package. Investigations into the incident are under investigation.
