The boy suffered serious injuries and was anaesthetised at the scene.

He could not be airlifted to hospital as he had received anaesthetic, so was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital by ambulance.

The air ambulance remained on the car park for some time, as it was damaged when it landed.

A spokesman for North West Air Ambulance said: "The tail did get damaged in the landing, so we wouldn't have been able to fly until an engineer had checked it over and given the go ahead.

"It was deemed okay to fly back to the base and they sorted it out there, because we have engineers at the base, and it's back flying again."
