Burnham becomes first Greater Manchester mayor

Former borough MP Andy Burnham has won the vote to become Greater Manchester's metro mayor.

Mr Burnham, who was selected as Labour candidate ahead of outgoing interim mayor Tony Lloyd, had been the favourite to land the role created by GM's devolution deal.

In Wigan borough he received 47,266 votes compared with Sean Anstee (Conservative) coming second with 10,588 votes. This share was reflected across the 10 local authority areas.

Will Patterson, the Green Party candidate and Wigan resident, received 1,295 votes.

The new mayor will work alongside the leaders of the 10 councils in deciding policy.

The overall turnout across the region was 28.93 per cent with 573,543 votes cast.

In Wigan borough the turnout was 27.29 per cent with 64,236 cast.
