THE Chamber’s annual Wigan business awards ceremony took place on Friday November 16 at the DW Stadium.

It was a fantastic evening attended by more than 300 guests, with keynote speakers Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, and Brian Simpson MEP.

The 10 award categories were all hard-fought and congratulations to the winners – Better Bathrooms, Glitz, Fleet Dynamic, D and J Fabrications, Fashion PA Boutique, Truly Scrumptious, Carbon Consultancy, Avatar, Lowri Beck and Compassion in Action - who have all been featured in this newspaper over the last few weeks.

As well as celebrating the best of Wigan business, there needs to be recognition of the support of the sponsors, all businesses themselves, many of whom have supported the business awards every year since their inception.

What was really interesting throughout the planning and judging of the awards was to hear the stories of businesses in Wigan that are thriving despite the difficult economic times, bucking the national trends and stealing a march on their competitors.

With such a gloomy outlook for the economy, it is easy to forget that Wigan has a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a powerful community pride, alongside some strong sectors such as manufacturing, food and environmental technologies.

The environment and low carbon sector is the subject of the Chamber’s next Action for Business networking forum that is taking place on Thursday December 6 at the Haydock Park racecourse.

This event is free to Chamber members but non-members are also welcome and if you are interested in coming along, check the Chamber website: www.gmchamber.co.uk/events. It would be great to see you there to have the first mince pie of the festive season!
