ANOTHER DIY store is to open in Wigan - the fourth within a one-mile radius.

Machine Mart will open its 60th store off Ormskirk Road, Newtown in October. It will be the fourth store of its kind in the area, adding to Wickes, B&Q and Screwfix.

Machine Mart, a national retailer which specialises in tools and equipment, will be housed in the former Motorworld retail unit near the Saddle Junction.

Bosses are uncertain as to how many jobs the new store will provide but have confirmed that more than five positions will be created.

The new Machine Mart store which will be the first for the borough will be 3,500 sq ft and will provide a range of goods for Do-It-Yourself enthusiasts and labourers, from air compressors, to power tools, to health and safety items.

The new outlet will be a one-stop-shop for top brands such as Dewalt, Bosch, Makita and Clarke and will open on October 20.

A spokesman for Machine Mart said: “We are really excited about opening a store in Wigan and we are sure it will be one of our most successful.”

Susan Gambles, head of economic development, added: “It’s good to see new retailers coming into Wigan and to see established firms strengthening their business position.

“There are a number of new shops and outlets coming to our town centre which is excellent news for shoppers and for the local economy.

“Whilst Wigan has done comparatively well amid the economic downturn, we have lost some local businesses, so I hope all residents will continue to buy local and support the traders in our area.”

There was more good news in the town centre as jewellery and accessories store Love Forever announced it is opening in The Galleries shopping centre. It follows the opening of Paparatzzi ladieswear and Duffer Menswear who recently re-located to the entrance unit in Makinson Arcade.

Richard Paxton, centre director, said: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of these new stores in Makinson Arcade.”
