THE number of people out of work in Wigan fell by almost 400 last month, official figures released yesterday reveal.
Data from the Office of National Statistics shows those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in the borough dropped by 387 to 8,931.
The number of unemployed people aged under 25 also fell, dropping by 145 to 2,530.
Nationally, joblessness dropped by 57,000 to 2.51m.
Christian Spence, Head of Business Intelligence at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said: “The picture is a positive one and supports the evidence from the Chamber of Commerce’s recent Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) that employment will continue to rise over the coming months as the recovery becomes more firm. Further growth is expected next quarter.”
