A LIGHTING company is preparing to work with one of the country’s busiest airports to save thousands of pounds in energy costs.
Atherton-based MHA Lighting has secured a contract to supply LED lights to Manchester Airport’s terminal two and three car parks.
The company, which specialises in innovative lighting solutions, triumphed over national lighting firms to transform the design of the car park fittings at the UK’s fourth busiest airport.
The airport has revealed it will save £80,000 a year on electricity in its car parks due to the new LED lighting.
Tom Harrison, Managing Director of MHA Lighting, said: “The LED lighting contract for Manchester Airport is a major boost for British innovation, technology and manufacturing.
“It’s also great news for the North West and we are delighted to be working with this prestigious client.
“Time was a big factor in this project and from initial meeting to delivery took less than six weeks.”
MHA Lighting was chosen due to its ability to design, manufacture and deliver powerful bespoke LED lighting solutions.
The company, in Station House, Atherton, created a powerful retro-fit solution which replaces 2000 80w bulbs across the airport’s two car parks with 30 and 40 Watt LED units.
Their “rod-lite” technology involves using plastic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required.
This means that the company can use high power LEDs, draw less current and has no need to diffuse the output.
It also means light can be distributed consistently, just like traditional fluorescents and halogens.
The replacement lighting formed part of Manchester Airport’s wider environmental strategy to halve carbon emissions and cut energy bills by an estimated 60 per cent.
Jonathan Beswick, Manchester Airport Project Technician, said: “After several months of trialling numerous lighting technologies and designs, MHA Lighting’s bespoke retrofit LED solution outshone all others.
“We were particularly impressed with the speed and efficiency of MHA Lighting to design, fit and test their product to our stringent criteria. The end product has exceeded our expectations.”
