A NEW service for elderly people aims to change the face of ageing care in Wigan.

Home Instead, which was set up in Pemberton at the end of last year, is part of a worldwide organisation which aims to provide high-quality care for older people in the comfort of their own homes.

The issue is a topical one given the recent debate about folk having to sell their homes to pay for care home places.

Services are tailor-made to the needs of the individual, putting clients and their families in control of the service they receive.

Carers at Home Instead ensure that clients get the care they need at a time which suits them, whether it be home with help with housework, companionship or personal care, enabling them to retain their independence.

Jeff Rowson, 71, of Billinge, who has three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, which leaves him unable to walk far.

He lives near to his daughter, Elaine Hibbs, who helps out, but he uses Home Instead’s services to allow him gain more independence.

He said: “My carer, Angela Carrington, helps me get dressed, makes my breakfast, does my shopping and takes my dog, Jack, out for a walk. She also does my washing and ironing.

“I find her very useful and obliging and she offers me someone to talk to, as I don’t see many people now.

“The service has certainly changed my life as I can have my independence now.”

Home Instead provides care across the borough 365 days a year, delivering services from one hour up to 24 hours a day.

Phil Eckersley, who runs Home Instead, said: “We are all very aware of the issues surrounding quality care services for the elderly and I have experienced difficulty myself in finding quality care for my own family members.

“The Home Instead Senior Care service really stands out, we are different and we are striving to make a difference in the community, not only to the people we work with but to their families also.”
