The DVLA is bringing one of its five annual mass auctions of registrations to Kilhey Court, Standish, with 1,250 lots going under the hammer over three days and an incredible amount of cash expected to be splashed.

It is the first time Wigan has been the venue for the sales and there should be something in the catalogue to suit most motoring budgets, with prices starting at around £250.

The sale should also have something to suit most tastes, with fans of particular car makers, sports, films or just a robust sense of humour getting the opportunity to purchase the perfect plate for their wheels.

Jody Davies, DVLA personalised registrations’ senior sales manager, said: “Our auctions always attract customers from all over the UK, as we have rarely visited the North West and never encamped in Wigan before we thought it was long overdue that we did. Kilhey Court Hotel is prestigious and perfect for our needs.

“We have unearthed a varied array of personalised registrations to suit all tastes and, hopefully, budgets that will surely make the three-day event as exciting as ever.”

Eye-watering amounts have changed hands at the previous auctions, although it is not expected that the Wigan sale will break the all-time record of £518,000 paid for a single number plate.

But there will still be plenty to tempt Wiganers.

Fans of the movie franchise Rocky can pay homage to their favourite flicks with RO11 CKY while cricketers will be hit for six by the plate OW10 ZAT. Footballers may be interested in DR18 BLE while fans of the hugely-successful movie Frozen may want to snap up ELL 5A.

Names on sale include HER 811E, GR11 ANT and ST17 EVE, while those who have been unsuccessful elsewhere could get themselves OUT 81D and those simply stunned by the whole occasion have the perfect registration in OGO 555H.

The hotel is currently being turned into an international auction house with live online bidding facilities and a bank of telephone operators ready to take calls from all over the globe.
