A DRIVER suffered a serious head injury when his car smashed into a brick wall.
Fire crews from Wigan and Hindley were called to the incident on Bolton Road between Bamfurlong and Ashton at just after 6am this morning (Tuesday).
The male driver, thought to be in his 20s, sustained injuries to his head and neck and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital.
A passenger, also a male, had left the vehicle by the time emergency crews reached the scene and is thought to have suffered whiplash related injuries.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “It appears the driver has lost control of the vehicle coming over a canal bridge in wet conditions, left the road and hit a wall outside a property.
“Paramedics were already on the scene when we arrived. The driver had suffered a bad injury to his head and was in and out of consciousness.

“He did not need cutting out of the vehicle but we assisted the medical staff in making sure his back and neck were straight as he was taken out of the car.”
The road was closed while officers cleared debris but it has now been re-opened, firefighters said.
