Car driver flees scene of accident after vehicle collides with bus

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision between a bus and a car, following which the car driver fled the scene and left behind his injured passenger.

The incident occurred on Holden Road in Leigh shortly after 2.30pm today, September 3rd, when a Vauxhall collided with the bus. Two people were taken to Wigan Infirmary by ambulance but their injuries are not known. An air ambulance was also called to the scene but was not used.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We sent two rapid response vehicles and two ambulances to Holden Road. An air ambulance also attended.

"We have taken two patients to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan in two separate land ambulances."

Atherton fire station crew manager Dearden said firefighters were called to assist shortly around 3pm.

He said: "We had an RTC between a bus and a car. The driver from the vehicle absconded at the scene, but the passenger in the car suffered injuries and was being tretaed by NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) paramedics.

"A man on the bus also suffered injuries and was treated by paramedics too."

Two appliances and a technical rescue unit from Atherton were sent to the scene to assist paramedics and the police.

Traffic diversions are currently in place.
