The westbound carriageway of the road was closed but has since reopened. Traffic on the road is generally coping well but there is congestion heading towards the M6 J23.

Leigh Fire Station watch manager Martin Brocklehurst said: "The crash involved two cars at the junction of Lane Head on the East Lancashire Road.

"One was a Honda and the other was a Citroen. The Honda ended up on its roof and the Citroen was still on its wheels.

"The traffic lights had been ineffective and it caused the traffic to slow. The two cars then caught each other coming from opposite directions."

He added: "The male driver of the Honda and female driver of the Citroen were out of the cars by the time we arrived and made the vehicles safe."
