A car fire on East Lancs Road this afternoon caused traffic chaos for motorists.

Firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle on fire on the Liverpool-bound carriageway near Lowton at around 12.30pm.

On arrival fire crews found a Peugeot 206 up in flames. The driver and passengers had been in convoy with another family when they smelled smoke and pulled the car over.

Leigh firefighters attended and doused the fire with a hose reel, using a thermal imaging camera to check that the flames were thoroughly extinguished.

Police assisted crews by closing one lane of traffic as the vehicle was put out and removed. The incident caused traffic to back up on the dual carriageway.

No one was injured in the fire.
