Car hits fence and ploughs into lamp post

A DRIVER was taken to hospital after a car hit a section of fencing before ploughing into a lamp post.

The incident happened on Bickershaw Lane on the outskirts of Platt Bridge at around 6.40am on Wednesday.

Firefighters from Hindley station found the wrecked Volkswagen Golf with the engine removed from the car by the force of impact.

The driver was taken to Wigan Infirmary with suspected lower back injuries, the extent of which are currently not known.

The road was shut while the car was moved, causing some delays to the morning commute.

Firefighters spent around 20 minutes at the scene.
