Wigan Observer reader Will Jones took pictures of the wreckage, remarking that the parcel shelf was on the ground as if the occupants had time to empty the boot before fleeing, and that there was no ignition damage.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers had responded to reports of a collision on Whelley at around 2.05am on Sunday and that witnesses had seen two men running away from the badly damaged vehicle.

She added that a 42-year-old man had subsequently been arrested on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle and was still undergoing questioning.

At least one other suspect remains at large.

Officers ask that anyone who witnessed the collision or has any more details about it to contact them on 101 quoting crime reference number 274 of March 19 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
