The smashed up Vauxhall Corsa on Whelley after the early hours crash near the junction with Cumberland Street

Residents were woken by the sound of squealing brakes and a loud bang as the black Vauxhall Corsa careered out of control on the main road in Whelley and crashed through a wall and fence.

It came to rest on a verge near Whelley’s junction with Cumberland Street and two men were seen fleeing on foot. At least one appeared to have been injured.

Wigan Observer reader Will Jones took pictures of the wreckage, remarking that the parcel shelf was on the ground as if the occupants had time to empty the boot before fleeing, and that there was no ignition damage.
