Club relaunch hopes to curb village woes

Shevington Youth Club closed over a year ago, but has been given a new lease of life thanks to a partnership between the community, Wigan Council and Greater Manchester Police.

It will initially open every Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm, and Shevington High pupils have been consulted to find out what activities they would like to run from the independent facility.

It is hoped the re-opening will address some anti-social behaviour issues in the area and offer young people somewhere safe to socialise with activities including sports, arts and crafts, cooking and relaxing.

Club secretary John Whiteley said: “This has always been a community building and we wanted to do something good for the community. We’ve had a lot of help from the council over the years, but this time we’re working with them differently and they’ve helped us in other ways including accessing grants and practical support.

“We have three new paid youth workers, who are fully trained and ready to support the young people. The club will also be open to hire for events. We hope it will be something the whole community can benefit from.”

James Winterbottom, director of children’s services, said: “The partners have worked together to make this happen, to reduce anti-social behaviour and provide more opportunities and activities for young people.”
