Residents will still get to have their say on the Taylor Unit, the neurological rehab centre at Leigh Infirmary, but Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be asking for feedback slightly later than the original suggestion of March.

Health bosses have sought extra expert advice after receiving bids to run the service, which caters for people from Wigan and Leigh and neighbouring boroughs.

The unit is moving because its current first-floor location is unsuitable but staff and relatives of patients are anxious a move could leave people with longer journeys.

The CCG has promised public voices will be heard and taken into account before any final decision on the unit, which has funding secured for up to 12 months, is made.

CCG chairman Dr Tim Dalton said: “We need to be absolutely confident that we get the right provider for the Greater Manchester neuro-rehabilitation unit currently run on the Taylor Ward at Leigh Infirmary.

“Following a formal process, we have received expressions of interest from organisations who have the experience and knowledge to deliver the high-quality service we require for Wigan and Bolton patients. With our partners in Bolton, we are currently reviewing the expressions of interest and this review will form the basis of the public consultation.

“In the spring, shortly after the review, we will launch the consultation asking for feedback from patients, residents, carers, families, staff and anyone else with an interest.

“This consultation will be an essential part of the process and will help us to understand the potential impact of any changes on the people who deliver and use this vital service.”
