Councillors pay for their own card

FUNDING for a Labour Party Christmas card did not come out of Wigan Council coffers, a councillor has confirmed.

Five thousand copies of the glossy card – which features photos of Lisa Nandy MP and councillors Chris Ready, John Hilton and Ron Conway – were sent out to constituents this week.

Producing so many copies reportedly cost “several hundred pounds”.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said receiving the festive card, which extends “Seasonal Greetings from your Labour Team”, felt like “a slap in the face” given the austere economic times.

But Aspull, New Springs and Whelley councillor Chris Ready reassured residents that it was paid for by the trio of councillors and Lisa Nandy out of their own pockets.

Coun Ready said: “Funding for this card had nothing to do with the council whatsoever. It came out of our own pockets. We could keep the money if we wanted but think it’s better to put our hands in our pockets and produce a card that most residents like to receive. The card is always well appreciated - especially by the elderly.”

The festive card features the contact details of Lisa Nandy and the three councillors involved, a 2011 calendar and a list of useful telephone numbers.

Coun Ready added: “We’ve produced a Labour Party Christmas card in Wigan for six or seven years. One year there was a printing problem and we were deluged with people saying they hadn’t had their card yet.”
