A quick-thinking neighbour has saved a Wigan business from suffering substantial fire damage.
Crews from Wigan and Hindley fire stations spent four hours tackling an overnight blaze at the Sherman & Young timber merchants in Bryn.
A resident living nearby to the Soughers Lane yard called the fire service after spotting smoke billowing from the roof of the firm’s warehouse at around 10pm on Friday night.
Firefighter Kieron Reid said: “The early call has allowed us to get in and confine the fire to one section of the property. The owner was still hopeful of opening for business as usual today (Saturday) and that’s all thanks to the neighbour who called it in.
“We were there from 10.20pm to 2.20am and a pump is still on site this morning.”
The cause of the blaze is not yet known but fire investigators have now been called in.
