Armed Wigan robber demands a free basket of groceries

Police are hunting a robber who threatened a Wigan shop assistant at knifepoint before fleeing with a basket of groceries.

Investigating officers have released stills from the CCTV cameras at Orrell Co-op of a man they want to speak to in connection with Sunday's terrifying raid and appealed for witnesses.

The raider, who was disguised by a coronavirus face mask, fled in a getaway car waiting nearby with a woman in the passenger seat.

It was at around 11.30am on Sunday that the man walked into the Church Street store, produced a large kitchen knife with a black handle and 8ins blade and demanded to leave the premises with a free basketful of shopping.

The male store worker was uninjured but left shaken by the ordeal.

The robber fled on foot before getting into a dark blue Ford Forcus parked on Station Avenue, in which a woman was already waiting. It then drove off onto Church Drive and turned left onto Church Street.

Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to following the robbery. He is of slim build, with dark hair, wearing a dark shirt, grey hoodie, and dark pants.

PC Sarah Noblett of GMP's Wigan District said: "The store worker has been put through a terrifying ordeal and we're determined to find the person responsible.
