Arson attacks on Wigan gravestones cause heartache for families
Two arson attacks have been carried out on headstones in a Wigan cemetery.
Police say they have stepped up patrols at Gidlow Cemetery, in Standish Road, after damage was caused to two graves in late May and early June.
A GMP Wigan West spokesman said: "In both incidents unknown offenders have set to burn or melt the trinkets that were placed over headstones.
"This has caused extreme distress to the families involved.
"Both incidents occurred between May 28 and May 30 and June 1 and June 4."
Neighbourhood police are keeping the area under surveilllance.
Anyone who has any information with regards to the attacks are being asked to call police on 101 or the Crimestoppers hotline, 0800 555 111, in confidence.
