Car believed to be involved in a number of Wigan burglaries seized

A car believed to have been involved in a number of burglaries in Wigan has been seized by police.

Officers were called to Gauntley Gardens in Orrell, on Monday night (January 25) to reports of men breaking into cars.

Police believe the men were using the keyless scanning entry method to break into vehicles.

The men ran off when police arrived at the scene, leaving behind a white Nissan Juke on false plates. Officers said the car is the same as one stolen in Billinge several weeks ago.

The car has also been involved in a number of burglaries in Wigan over the last couple weeks, according to police.

The car will be forensically analysed.

A spokesman for GMP Wigan West said: "Officers attended a report of males breaking into cars using the keyless scanning entry method. This was at Gauntley Gardens Billinge .

"Offenders made off leaving behind the vehicle they arrived in this being a white Nissan Juke stolen a few weeks ago in Billinge In the Mersyside Police Area.

"This vehicle has been involved in a number of burglaries across the Wigan division in the last couple of weeks so will be forensically analysed. The vehicle was displaying false reg plates

"Despite officers best efforts and the help of a dog patrol , traffic patrol and helicopter the males made off before police arrival however leaving the Juke behind and the car they were attempting to steal.

"Please again be vigilant and ring the police if you see any suspicious activity.

They added: "Please store keyless entry car keys away from the outskirts of your homes or place them in a signal destroyer bag."

It comes after police reported a rise in the number of burglaries around Wigan, with neighbourhood policing teams increasing patrols in response to the increase.

The extra patrols has seen a mixture of plain clothes and uniformed officers take to the streets.

PCSO teams have also conducted leaflet drops in hotspot areas, particularly in places where there are bungalows and elderly residents.

Recent incidents have seen a spate of break-ins around Standish in Prospect Road, Sheldon Avenue and Bentham Road, while there have also been a number of burglaries in Golborne.

In Ashton there have also been break-ins of both cars and houses recently, where areas including Stubshaw Cross, Diane Road estate, Moxon Way/Wooton Drive area and Cansfield Grove have been targeted.
