Daniel Davies, 29, of no fixed address, had previously appeared before Wigan justices to deny taking the collection boxes and two bottles of Jack Daniels from an address in Leigh but later changed his plea.

He had already pleaded guilty to charges of stealing 11 bottles of whisky from Aldi in Leigh on November 23 and attempting to assault a police officer. Having been remanded in custody until sentencing, Davies was given 24 months in prison but the term was suspended for the same period. He must attend a drug rehab course, complete 10 days’ rehabilitation activities and pay compensation and court costs totalling £96.
