Detectives appeal for help to find potential witness to Wigan dad's murder

Detectives investigating the murder of a dad outside Wigan Parish Church are appealing for help to identify a potential witness.

Steven McMyler, 34, died in the church gardens on the evening on Thursday, August 6, despite the befort efforts of emergency services to save him.

A murder investigation was launched and three men and two teenage boys have been charged in relation to his death.

Police have now released CCTV images of a man they believe may have seen the incident in a bid to identify him and speak to him as part of their inquiries.

Det Insp Wes Knights, of Greater Manchester Police's major incident team, said: “Our investigation into Steven’s death has seen us work around the clock to try and ensure that his family and loved ones can get the answers they so desperately wish for.

“Today we are releasing images of a man who was in the area around the time of the incident and we hope will make contact with us as we want to speak to him in relation to the incident as he may hold key information.

“I want to make clear this man is being treated solely as a witness in our investigation and I hope he is able to see this and make contact with us so that we can explore this line of enquiry.”

Five people have been charged in connection with Steven's death and are due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on February 1.

A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and Jordan Short, 19, of Rushkey Hey Road, Kirkby, have both been charged with murder.

Michael Callam Wilson, 20, of Northfield Close, Northwood, Kirby, has been charged with joint-enterprise murder and robbery.

A 17-year-old from Merseyside has been charged with joint-enterprise murder.

Lewis Peake, 21, of James Street, Little Lever, Bolton, has been charged with joint-enterprise murder and conspiracy to rob.

Anyone with any information relating to the identity of the man in the images is asked to call police on 0161 856 8797, quoting incident 2974 of August 6.
