The brutal attack touched the firm so much that the business, who specialise in magnet fishing, decided to contact the man’s family.

After speaking to them, they promised to do anything in their ability to help, and it has seen them donate a professional fishing magnet and gloves to the victim.

His family have set up a GoFundMe page to help the man to buy a fishing experience trip and some new equipment, as well as to spoil him and show some love back from the community.

Magnet Store also called on all its magnet fishers to make a donation, with all contributors given the opportunity to win their very own £189.99 fishing magnet (G90) that lifts 1,550KG. The new owner of the G90 was randomly selected on Sunday.

Christopher Peters, director of Magnet Store, who have a unit near Arnold Clark in Wigan and offices in Leigh, said: “We heard about the pensioner being kicked into the Mersey.

“So we spoke to the family and they told us how it had brought the man to tears.

The man really thought he was going to drown and two women got him out.

“We thought we’d use our influence to raise a bit of money. The fundraising page has gone up from £400 to around £800 now. “

He added: “We just wanted to give something back , as it’s a bad time and very traumatic for him and his family.”

Following the incident, a 18-year-old man was charged with assault by beating and a 15-year-old boy with common assault.

The pair from Warrington are due before magistrates in the town on May 19.
