Driver admits speeding

A MOTORIST was convicted of a speeding charge - despite somebody else claiming they were the driver.

Craig Shaw, 48, accepted a speeding offence after his Vauxhall was clocked travelling at 59mph in a 50mph zone on the East Lancs Road on April 7.

In all subsequent correspondence he accepted that he was the driver - even apologising for not dropping his speed when the limit dropped from 60mph to 50mph.

But a woman belatedly claimed that she had been driving the vehicle at the time - despite photos proving that a man had been behind the wheel.

Wigan Magistrates ignored the woman’s eleventh-hour e-mail and instead convicted Shaw, of Moresby Drive, Manchester, of the offence.

They fined him £55 and ordered him to pay £35 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge. They endorsed his driving licence with three penalty points.
