Coun John Vickers said he hoped the new sign in Coupland Road, Hindley Green, would put an end to the “unpleasant form of anti-social behaviour.”

The sign reads: “Warning. No fly-tipping. This area may be under surveilance.

“As a result of the good work by the community also reporting the instances of fly tipping, I was able to forward information to council enforcement officers that resulted in a fixed penalty notice being issued against an offender and the warning sign being put up.

“I have also arranged a site meeting with council officers to look at suitable locations for CCTV cameras.

He added: “This, we hope, will go a long way to stopping this particularly unpleasant form of anti social behaviour in what was becoming a fly-tipping hotspot and will be a positive step in keeping Hindley Green clean and green.”

Dave Lyon, assistant director of environment at Wigan Council, has previously described fly-tipping as a “blight on the environment”.

He said: “If anybody has any evidence relating to fly-tipping instances, including vehicle registrations or names and addresses of the perpetrators, we encourage residents to contact us so we can investigate, with a view to appropriate enforcement on any individual identified individual.

“We have recently invested more additional covert CCTV cameras and equipment that can be deployed to fly tipping hot spots to identify the individuals responsible.

“We will always work with local councillors and residents to combat this unacceptable criminal behaviour, to ensure our borough is kept clean and tidy for all to enjoy.”
