A former rugby league player will stand trial after being accused of attacking a woman.

Karl Long, who played in both codes for Widnes, Sale Sharks, St Helens, London Broncos and Fylde before opening a tanning salon and nail bar in Wigan town centre in 2007, is charged with the assault and battery of Melanie Latimer in Up Holland on April 1.

The 37-year-old, of Stoney Brow, Up Holland, entered a plea of not guilty when he appeared in the dock at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court yesterday, Tuesday October 9.

Long, who is the brother of former St Helens and Great Britain legend Sean Long, will next appear in court for the trial on December 5 at Wigan and Leigh Courthouse.
