Karl Long, who played in both codes for Widnes, Sale Sharks, St Helens, London Broncos and Fylde before opening a tanning salon and nail bar in Wigan town centre in 2007, is charged with the assault and battery of Melanie Latimer in Up Holland on April 1.

The 37-year-old, of Stoney Brow, Up Holland, did not enter a plea when he appeared in the dock at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court.

The bench granted Long, the brother of former St Helens and Great Britain rugby league legend Sean, bail on condition that he does not have any contact with the complainant.

He is due to re-appear at the court this Tuesday.
