Bike Security - bike marking

POLICE are issuing security advice to cyclists after an increase in bike thefts across Wigan borough.

Around 50,000 bicycles are stolen every year nationally… yet bicycle theft is preventable.

Police are urging people to remember basic security, including:

Do not leave your bicycle in isolated places;

Park your bicycle safely and considerately where it will not cause a danger or obstruction to others

Always lock your bicycle when you leave it, even if it is only for a minute while you pop into the local shop

Use proper cycle anchors or robust street furniture, e.g. trees, parking meters, railings for securing your bicycle whenever possible

Lock your bicycle through the frame

Lock the wheels and other detachable parts

Remove smaller parts which cannot be secured and take them with you when you can, especially lights.

Security marking must be clearly visible and in two separate locations giving clear information of a post code followed by a house number. Example: WN5 0UP 5. Register your bicycle free at
