Man quizzed over Wigan horror stabbing as police seek possible second victim

One woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being knifed in the stomach during an incident outside a launderette on Wigan Lane on Thursday teatime.

Police have since been searching for a second woman who is believed to have suffered a minor facial injury.

A 48-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent - the most serious form of assault after attempted murder - and he remains in custody being questioned by detectives.

Areas around Swinley Road, Wigan Lane and Clifton Street were sealed off after the more serious incident at around 5.40pm.

Officers had been called to the scene after receiving reports of a dispute between a man and woman. When they arrived the woman was nowhere to be seen but she was eventually traced to Wigan Infirmary a short distance up the road, after the 32-year-old had staggered into A&E with a blade wound to her midriff.

The injury has been described by medics as "serious but not life-threatening" and she remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Police then learnt that at 48-year-old woman might also have suffered minor facial injuries and say they believe that the two attacks are linked.
