Police were contacted by the Ambulance Service at shortly after 4.40am on Saturday to a report a man was unconscious after being found with a stab wound at an address on Acregate.

He was taken to Aintree Hospital where he was, sadly, pronounced dead a short time later.

A subsequent post-mortem examination revealed the cause of his death to be a single puncture wound to his chest.

Mikitovs was due to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

A 30-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without charge.

Detectives are trying to piece together Mr Muzikants’ final movements and are asking anyone who knows anything about the incident to come forward.

Det Chief Insp Gareth Willis from Lancashire’s Force Major Investigation Team (FMIT) said: “My thoughts remain with Kristaps’s family, who are being supported by specially trained officers.

“While we have charged a man our inquiries are continuing and I would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch with us.”
