Man wielding knife in Wigan town centre is injured by police car after pursuit

A knife-wielding young man was struck by a police car following an incident in Wigan town centre this afternoon.

Around 2.30pm today, Wednesday September 23, police were called to New Market Street to reports of a man with a knife.

Officers attended and following a short pursuit on foot, a 20-year-old man was subsequently involved in a minor collision with a police vehicle.

The man was treated for minor injuries at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

He remains in custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing.

The knife was also recovered at the scene.

The incident will be referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, in line with normal procedure.
