Andrew Slaney struck PC Khan in the face and chest no fewer than three times when the officer tried to calm him down following a heated argument at the family home.

Appearing before Wigan magistrates, 42-year-old Slaney, of The Avenue, Leigh, pleaded guilty to assaulting a constable in the line of duty.

The court heard PC Khan and another officer were called to reports of a domestic incident at the address shortly after midnight on May 30.

On arrival, police found Slaney “clearly under the influence of alcohol.” He had reportedly consumed five cans of lager and a small bottle of whiskey, and had called the police while rowing with his father.

While police were assessing the situation, Slaney’s father walked into the room and told his son he “could not keep threatening us in our own home”.

At this point, Slaney became angry, but turned his frustration towards the police. He pushed PC Khan into the wall before punching him in the mouth.

The officer tried to detain Slaney at this time, but was punched again, this time in the chest. Slaney was eventually restrained before the blows could continue.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, PC Khan revealed how he was left “disgusted at this unprovoked assault”.

He said: “I was punched twice in the face and punched in the chest.

“This is the first time I’ve been assaulted and I hope it is the last.”

He also revealed he has suffered sleepless nights as a result of the incident.

Slaney was sentenced to 100 hours’ unpaid work, and ordered to pay £100 in compensation to PC Khan, £85 in court costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
