Police are at the scene of a murder probe after a woman - named locally as mum-of-one Melissa Belshaw - died in a knife attack in Billinge.

Police were called to Upholland Road to reports of an attack with a knife shortly after 4.10pm on Wednesday.

They found the woman, who is believed to be 32, had been stabbed inside a house.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) described her injuries as “catastrophic”.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 40s has been taken to hospital where he is in a serious condition.

It is believed he was injured trying to intervene in the stabbing, although GMP stressed that enquiries are still in their very early stages.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
