Police have launched an investigation following the grisly discovery of human remains in woodland next to one of Britain's busiest motorway junctions.

The bones were found in dense overgrowth near Junction 9 of the M6 in Wednesbury on Monday evening (12/4).

West Midlands Police said the remains appeared to have been there "for some time" and tests were now being carried out to identify the victim.

Officers have been scouring the area for clues after the grim find, which was made near to the Gallagher Shopping Park, an Ikea superstore and railway line.

A force spokesperson said: "We are investigating after human remains were found in Axeltree Way, Wednesbury yesterday evening.

"The remains appear to have been there for some time and tests are being carried out to identify the victim and establish the cause of death.

"Anyone with information should contact us quoting log 3826 of 12/4."
