A BRAVE householder grappled with a hammer-wielding thug after a gang raided his home in Wigan, police have revealed.
The 29-year-old was set upon as he came across three masked men breaking into his kitchen.
He courageously wrestled with one of the intruders who was brandishing a claw hammer and in the process managed to drag him out through the front door and into the street.
But the robber’s two accomplices took the opportunity to steal valuables from the house before all three eventually fled the scene.
Police say the victim, who has not been named, was left shaken and shocked by his ordeal, but did not suffer any serious injuries in the attack.
Police today appealed for information about the raid at an address in Atherton Road, Hindley.
It took place on Friday, February 25, but police have just revealed information about the incident.
The man told officers that it was at about 9.40pm when he went into the kitchen to investigate noises he could hear coming from the room.
There he came face to face with three men with masks on and immediately launched an attack on one of them in a bid to get them out of his house.
He went for the one holding a hammer and the struggle spilled out into the street.
Eventually the gang got away with a quantity of cash and some personal items.
Two of the men were dressed in black, the other was a white man who was shorter than 5ft 11ins tall, of medium build who was wearing a black coat with the hood up.
No details have been given of where the men went after the raid nor of whether they had a getaway vehicle.
The victim has declined to speak publicly of his ordeal.
A police spokesman said: “This was a serious crime and we would like to speak to anyone with information about who was responsible.”
