The incident happened on a packed street as party-goers were out in full force for Boxing Day.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said that officers were called to a disturbance and reports of dangerous driving but that the offender(s) had "made off" when they arrived.

One witness told Wigan Today: "It was horrific.

"People were screaming, shouting and crying.
