Daniel Taberner was this week beginning a 20-month prison sentence after he admitted to dangerous driving and other road offences. A Bolton Crown Court judge heard that when police ran a check on the silver Ford Ka that had just pulled out in front of them on Bryn Road, Bryn, shortly after 1am on April 9 the registration did not match the vehicle.

The patrol followed, flagged down the Ka on Warrington Road at Marus Bridge and the driver at first made as if to slow down.

But the hearing was told that he then mounted the kerb and sped away from the officers and off down Poolstock Lane.

Speed monitoring equipment in the patrol car registered that the fleeing vehicle was hitting speeds of between 70 and 80mph on what is built up area with a limit of only 30mph.

The pursuit then continued for a number of miles.

By the time the Ka had reached Bickershaw Lane in Abram, the Greater Manchester Police helicopter had been scrambled and was tracking its progress.

The court heard the car was eventually dumped on Bryn Road South back in Bryn, but the driver was found a short while later and arrested.

It was found that the registration plate belonged to a vehicle in Leeds.

Taberner, 30, of Palm Avenue, Ashton-in-Makerfield, had already pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, driving while disqualified and using false number plates at a previous hearing at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court.

As well as the one year and eight months prison sentence, he was also hit with a driving ban of 33 months by the judge.
