Police launched an investigation after the man was injured outside McDonald's, on Folly Lane, Warrington, shortly before 3.30am on Saturday.
He had been standing outside the restaurant with a group of friends when he was attacked by a man with a knife.
Jordan Hughes, 21, of Calgarth Avenue, Bewsey, Warrington, was arrested on Saturday and has been charged with possession of a knife in a public place and section 18 assault – grievous bodily harm with intent.
He appeared at Warrington Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court next month.
