Annette Causey also pleaded guilty to smuggling contraband tobacco into Hindley Prison when she appeared before a Bolton judge.

The 33-year-old, of Warrington Road, Abram, faced three charges, including one that she conspired with four members of the public to supply cannabis resin between April and July 2018 at the Bickershaw institution.

Original registers from Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court gave Causey's job description as a prison officer, but after a reader pointed out that this was incorrect, the Crown Prosecution Service has since clarified that she did in fact work as a supervisor in the prison kitchens.

Causey was also charged with conspiring to supply class B drugs and tobacco between March and July 2018 and smuggling tobacco into the jail for a prisoner on July 10, 2018.

One co-accused – 24-year-old Kayleigh Sanderson, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes – was cleared of conspiring to supply cannabis resin earlier this year. But Jamie Ellis, 29, of Lakenheath Road, Knowsley, admitted conspiracy to supply cannabis resin and six mobiles inside prison between March and July 2018.

And Mark Berry, 31, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes, who initially denied conspiring to supply cannabis resin and possessing a mobile inside a prison, has since changed his pleas.

All three will be sentenced on May 20.
