Woman, 29, escapes from suspected arson attack on house in Wigan

Firefighters were alerted to a first-floor blaze at a property in Manning Avenue, Springfield, just after 5am today.

Police say a 29-year-old woman managed to escape from the property.

Her injuries were treated at the scene by paramedics.

But officers believed that the fire could be classified as arson and a witness appeal has been issued.

Det Sgt Stephen Wiggins, from GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “Thankfully there were no serious injuries but when there is a fire, the worst case scenario is a real and terrifying possibility.

“We are now appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the early hours of Monday morning to come forward and talk to police.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we will continue to work with the fire service to establish the full circumstances and find whoever is responsible.”

Police have confirmed that there is suspected to be third-party involvement in the incident.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire was dealt with by four firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, and using two hosereel jets.

Fire investigators and police placed a cordon around the scene for most of the morning.
