Police taped off several areas of Swinley in search of a knife following an incident on Wigan Lane at around 5.40pm on Thursday.

The attack took place close to Wigan Infirmary and the victim managed to get herself swiftly to A&E for treatment and it was there that police found her after they were called to the original scene.

Insp Muz Kernain of Greater Manchester Police said: "We received reports of a dispute ongoing in the street between a male and a female on Wigan Lane at about 5.40pm on Thursday and when officers finally found the woman, they discovered she had suffered stab wound to her stomach.

"A man has since been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in custody while a search is under way for a bladed weapon. As a result several streets have been taped off in the Wigan and Swinley area.

"Things are at an early stage and we have been told that there may be a second victim.
