DanceSyndrome, which hosts dance classes in Hindley for people with disabilities, has been named a finalist in the E3 Business Awards in the “charity of the year” category.

The charity, which was founded by dancer Jen Blackwell, who has Down’s Syndrome, provides inclusive dance lessons and leadership training for people with and without disabilities in the borough.

DanceSyndrome’s dancers also perform live at special events across the UK, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with the aim of inspiring people and demonstrating that people with disabilities can live that they choose.

Mubarak Chati, managing director of 1 Events Media who is hosting the awards has said that the group has fought off “fierce competition” to reach the shortlisting stage.

Mr Chati said: “This year, we’ve seen such a strong turn-out that we’ve taken the unusual step of expanding the number of finalists in most of the key categories.

“It’s also been really good to see that we have finalists from every county of the North West, from Cumbria to Cheshire.

"The E3 Business Awards are all about inclusivity, so to see such a healthy mix of mainstream and rural businesses, women and young entrepreneurs, social enterprises and so on - that’s fantastic, and just what we want to see.

“Given that we’ve had our best ever influx of nominations, anyone who has made it to the shortlist stage has done so against the very fiercest competition. As one of our 2018 finalists, DanceSyndrome should feel very proud indeed.”

The ceremony will be held at the Macron Stadium in Bolton on July 12.

A number of other Wigan organisations are also in contention at the E3 Business Awards. For details see this week’s Wigan Observer.
