Death charge driver

A WIGAN community leader is to stand trial over the death of a man who died when their cars crashed.

Kurdish asylum seeker Khaled Amini, 35, of Linden Avenue, Orrell, pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to causing the death of father-of-two Steve Haycock on February 14, 2010 by careless driving.

Garage owner Mr Amini was vice-chair of the now defunct minority ethnic representation group, World in Wigan.

His Peugeot 306 was involved in a collision with Mr Haycock’s Suzuki Wagon-R on the exit from a bend on the B4109 at Wolvey, Warwickshire.

Mr Haycock, 61, came from Bulkington, near Nuneaton.

An inquest into his death has since been opened and adjourned pending the outcome of the court case.

The case was adjourned for a five-day trial on a date to be fixed, and Amini was granted unconditional bail.
