WIGAN pet owners who leave their dog’s mess on the ground could be the next target for council spies.
Residents throughout the borough are being asked to spy on fellow dog walkers to help clamp down on unsightly excrement.
In a crackdown campaign against the foul, Wigan council is appealing for witnesses to come forward with enough information to catch those guilty of not picking up after their dog.
Coun Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for environment, said: “While we get a lot of calls from residents reporting the crime, the information they provide is usually not sufficient to identify the perpetrators.
“In an effort to eliminate the mess from our streets and green spaces, we’re asking our residents to help.”
If an owner is caught not cleaning up after their dog, they will be issued with a fixed penalty fine of £50.
If that is not paid, it will result in prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 on conviction.
Terry Dunn, director for environment at Wigan Council, added: “We’re asking responsible dog owners, who pick up after their dog, and residents of the borough, to help us to identify those who don’t.”
