At its height flames were billowing 100ft into the air and plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around as crews from all four of the borough's stations and others outside the area fought the blaze in Moat House Street, Ince.

Emergency services were called to the incident involving a quantity of vehicles in an open yard at 3.15am on Friday.

Residents and businesses in the area have been urged to keep windows and doors closed.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze involves an outbuilding, piles of tyres and numerous vehicles including at least one heavy-goods vehicle.

It is the second fire to hit Moat House Street in recent weeks. Local crews were also called out to burning garage buildings on May 22.
