A REVAMP of one of Wigan’s busiest retail parks is under consideration by council planning officers and could trigger a redesign.
Proposals have been submitted to place three new units plus a drive-through coffee shop at the Robin Park retail area on Loire Drive.
If approval is granted, the four new units will be placed in current car parking space close to Burger King and Carphone Warehouse, meaning a layout change.
Planning documents do not include details of which retailers are in line to take up the units, although images of the coffee shop have Costa branding.
The retail park already houses one branch of Costa as part of the Next store. A statement from the coffee firm said: “We are currently evaluating drive-thru opportunities in the Wigan area, but have no firm plans in place at this stage.”
A consultation period for the application will end next month meaning a decision can be expected soon after if there is no referral to the council’s planning committee.
An expansion of the retail park’s portfolio of stores will be seen as a welcome boost given that two potential developments may have taken the focus of shoppers away from Robin Park.
Planning approval was granted last year for a £60m masterplan to redevelop The Galleries in Wigan town centre.
The ambitious proposals by Vale Retail have been tipped to create 400 jobs and include space for several retail units but building works are not expected to start until 2016.
And separate developers Scarborough Group insist plans to build a major hotel with retail units are still on track at the Tower Grand site next to the Grand Arcade.
